| Greetings!
A Message from our Chapter President:
Meeting new people, one of the first questions that is generally asked
is "What is it that you do for a living?" Of course, we all have our answers.
Me, I'm a writer. Not, a fun-type of writer like a novelist or something. I
have zero creative writing skills. I'm a technical writer. I write the
instruction manuals that you probably don't read. Most people on hearing what I
do, say something along the lines of 'Oh, that sounds interesting.' And, of
course, interesting usually is made to sound like 'Are you crazy?' For those who are actually interested in learning
about what I do, it's a hard field to explain. I write for a product that I
don't even fully understand, so how can anyone else be expected to? The same can be said about alumnae membership in TriDelta. So many
people, males and females alike, have wonderful Greek experiences in college,
where Greek life is a part of campus life and a part of your culture and
identity. But, after college, it seems that the lifetime membership aspect of a
Greek organization can be hard to explain. "What
does your alumnae chapter do?" "Why do you still participate in an
alumnae chapter?" Those questions come up, and come up frequently, when I mention that I
am involved with the San Jose TriDelta Alumnae Chapter. Similar to my
profession, it's a hard thing to explain, and a hard thing for people not part
of the experience to understand. For me, I loved my undergraduate experience. From spending an evening
trying to clean the bubbles exploding from the dishwasher when we were supposed
to be having a new member meet & greet (it's a funny story, ask me about it
some time!) to member retreats complete with cookie dough, I made a lot of
friends and had a lot of wonderful experiences. Involvement in the alumnae chapter has been a similar experience. From
people willing to be a family away from home, giving hugs and support as needed,
always willing to give airport rides (and at 4am, that's a big deal!), to go
out to eat after a bad day or week at work, go shopping when you just need a
break, tour guide helpers when you have friends or family visiting, and just
people who care about you and want to see you once a month. Throughout my three years as a member of the San Jose TriDelta Alumnae
Chapter, I've come to know the women in the chapter as a fun-loving, supportive
group who are always up for the latest Sex
& the City movie (and if you haven't seen it, Jane must not be doing
her job!), and dinner nights at Chili's to support St. Jude's. We've played
getting to know you games and had speakers from our chapter share their areas
of expertise - from insurance, to preserving photographs and creating family
histories, to jewelry making. If you are a returning member from the 2009 - 2010 year, I look forward
to seeing you at our upcoming September kick-off meeting and hearing all about
your summer vacation! If you are an alumna who has not been active in the past (or even in
the recent past as this is only my 4th year here), I want to
personally invite you to the September meeting and encourage you to either join
us for the first time or return after a 1- or even a 10-year absence. And, I'd
love to meet you and get to know you and share collegiate stories as well as
discuss our current hobbies. Plus, I, for one, can't wait to hear how Cindy
traveled for over three weeks with a carry on. I have issues working with just
a carry on when I travel for more than 4 days! As a further incentive, any alumna who attends the first meeting and
pays her annual dues on or before the September meeting will be entered into a
raffle drawing for free movie ticket vouchers. If you can't make the September meeting, please come when you can and
know that any alumna, however frequently or infrequently, is always welcome at
our meetings. There are some great events on the calendar this year, and some
new and exciting things to look forward too! I hope that you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to the
upcoming fall! I hope to see you shortly. Delta Love and Mine, Christi Guzik San Jose TriDelta Alumnae Chapter President, 2010 - 2012 Alpha Tau, Carnegie Mellon University, Class of 2005

| Panhellenic Happenings! | Welcome
back from summer sister Deltas!! South Bay Alumnae Panhellenic
has been hard at work over the summer to bring to you a full calendar of
events for the 2010-2011 program year. We are so excited to present you
with some new ways to mix and mingle with your Panhellenic sisters!
Thank
you all again for your support of SBAP and our scholarship fund which
benefits an active sorority woman at SJSU and one at Santa Clara
University. This past year we were able to award two $750 scholarships
through our fundraising efforts! Through the events we host, we are able
to raise money for our scholarship fund and we hope to be so successful
this year that we can donate two $1000 scholarships to our well
deserving undergraduate members! Your support as Tri Deltas has not gone
unnoticed and we are known for having the highest group attendance at
events, so thank you again for all of your support of this wonderful
group and cause!
COMING THIS FALL....
BEYOND THE BADGE IS BACK!
Come out and socialize with your sisters
at Los Gatos' newest wine bar, Enoteca La Storia on N. Santa Cruz Ave!
Wine and Hors d'oeuvres will be provided as well as a less structured setting
for networking and mingling amongst friends and sisters no matter what
stage of your career you are in. Highlights include an AMAZING raffle
(think massage session, free jewelry, personal photography session...)
which will benefit the scholarship fund as well as wine pairing and
tasting pointers from the pros at Enoteca La Storia! Bonus: 10% of all
bottle purchases will go directly towards our scholarship fund. And
parking is just right in front of the building!
Mark your
calender to join us:

Gatos, CA 95034
Please contact Renee Ropp,
renee_ropp@yahoo.com, if your or your business would be interested in
sponsoring this event through a raffle prize or donation. Thank you!
JANUARY
COMEDY NIGHT
Once again, SBAP will be hosting a comedy night out
with proceeds from the ticket sales going towards our scholarship fund.
In the past several years, we have been able to raise over $750 dollars
in just this event alone!! We are looking into moving the event from
Roster T Feathers to the San Jose Improv. Details to follow, date will
be mid to late January on a weekday evening.
ATHENA LUNCHEON
One
of my favorite events of the year, the Athena Luncheon is always well
attended by Tri Delta's!! This year we will be bringing our celebration
back to Los Gatos' California Cafe. Tickets will be $35 apiece and the
luncheon will include the presentation of the Athena award winners and
our undergraduate scholarship winners. We will continue the tradition of
each group making a "themed gift basket" to raffle off and last years
Breakfast basket was a huge hit so I can't wait to see what creative
ideas you ladies have for this year!!
Save the Date:
Saturday,
April 30, 201111:30 AM California Cafe Old Town Los Gatos 50 University Avenue, Suite 260 Los Gatos, CA 95030
This year I
will be serving as the chapter's delegate to SBAP as well as serving
SBAP as the Athena Luncheon Chair. If you ever have any questions,
suggestions, or inquiries about donating to our scholarship fund or
attending our events, please don't hesitate to contact me,

Shopping for a Cause!!
| Please remember to go
through our website, http://www.sjtridelta.org/ , when
purchasing anything from Amazon.
We get a portion of the profits, and it really adds
up. We made almost $300 last year this way!! Just go to the Tri Delta
website, click on the Amazon icon, and it takes you right to their
website. |
San Jose Tri Delta's Philanthropy Fun!
| This
year we will be participating in several charity projects to support
Tri Delta's national Philanthropic Cause of aiding in Pediatric Oncology
Centers, in particular St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Lucile
Packard Stanford Children's Hospital. Here's how you can help to
support both causes!
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL CHILI'S/ST JUDE MONTH!
The
official day that all proceeds from the purchase of any food or drink
at Chili's is Monday September 27th. Gather up some friends and dine out
for a great cause! Chili's has other promotional items available with
donations going towards St. Jude this month, including t shirts and
their "create a pepper" program. Chili's HOPE shirts, below, are
available for sale at all locations.
COME OUT AND DINE FOR A CAUSE IN JANUARY!
Before our meeting on Tuesday,
January 11th @ 6pm, we will meet at Chili's in Santana Row for dinner,
and 20% will go to St. Jude. This meal will also be followed at 7:30pm by a visit to
Chico's Santana Row for style tips and shopping!

UPCOMING VISIT AND TOUR OF LUCILE PACKARD!
Can't
make it to St. Jude in Memphis?? Let's take a look inside the world of
Pediatric Oncology right in our own backyard by taking a a tour and
making a visit to the patients at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at
Stanford. The event will be a Delta Doing most likely in February or
March 2011, look out for more details!
We will also be looking
into ways to make it easier for members to donate directly to Lucile
Packard and even take advantage of matching donations from the company
they work for!
CHRISTMAS FOREST WREATH AND GIFT SALES!
Love this tradition? Need a convenient and beautiful gift? Then feel free to visit www.christmasforest.com
AND enter our club code D/SJA . The chapter will be provided with a 10%
commission on every purchase. The code is valid all year long and the
site also has beautiful blown glass holiday ornaments and blown glass
hummingbird feeders, both made from the ash from the Mount St. Helen's
eruption, and which make great gifts any time of the year! Laura
Phillips has ordered several for individuals and couples with rave
results! Check out this easy way to support our philanthropic causes.
(photo above of actual product)
HOLIDAY GIFT WRAPPING EXTRAVAGANZA!!
Join
us on Saturday, December 11th as we gift wrap Holiday packages for
donations with proceeds going towards our philanthropic partners! We
will need volunteers for several shifts to cover the day (9 am - 10 pm)
as we meet at Barnes & Noble in the Costco shopping center located
at Hwy 85 & Almaden Expressway. Can't make it? While the paper will
be provided for us we will be accepting donations of bows and ribbons to
embellish our packages and up our tips! More details to follow.
Thanks for being generous, kind-hearted
sisters. You are the BEST!

Tri Delta meets it goal of $10 million to St. Jude!
|
In 2006, Tri Delta made a pledge to raise $10 million in 10 years for
a new patient care floor at St. Jude. This program was named 10 in 10.
In the 2005-2006 year alone Tri Delta members raised over $2.5 million
for a new Patient Care Floor. As the fraternity's philanthropic
fundraising grew exponentially, Tri Delta created a new goal of raising
the $10 million dollars in only four years. This new pledge was named
10 by 10, as the organization would be raising $10 million dollars by
2010. On July 1st at the Philanthropy Lunch during the 54th biennial
Convention, the announcement was made that Tri Delta had not only met,
but had surpassed the $10 million dollar goal in less than four years.
As of July 1st, 2010, Delta Delta Delta had raised $10,643,582 since the
$10 million dollar pledge was made on July 4th, 2006.
On July 31st at the St. Jude Collegiate Leadership seminar held at
the hospital in Memphis, TN, Tri Delta's celebrated our success and Tri Delta announced a new goal to benefit St. Jude: $15
million in 5 years for a new specialty clinic! |
Destination Tri Delta: Convention 2010!
|
Over the 4th of July weekend, over 750 members of collegiate
and alumnae chapters of TriDelta descended upon the JW Marriott hotel in
Orlando, FL for 4 days of convention activities. From the San Jose Alumnae Chapter, Christi Guzik served as our chapter delegate.
Renee Ropp and Kara Waggoner also attended as national Fraternity volunteers,
both serving as Financial Specialists.
 Above:
Financial Specialist Kara Waggoner presented the Fraternity's newest
award for the most outstanding undergraduate Vice President of Fiance
Officer.

three D while attending the final
banquet!
Christi shared a few reflections from the weeks activities:
"Going to my first convention was a pretty cool experience. I got to
meet up with one of my collegiate sisters from CMU who is now the Alumnae
Chapter President of the Pittsburgh South Suburban Chapter. At the final
banquet, we arranged a Pittsburgh table for all the CMU and Pitt collegiate and
alum in attendance (well, the ones we knew about) and managed to fill a whole
Pittsburgh table! I was able to spend lunch with Kara and Renee from our
chapter. And, I got a chance to meet some great ladies from the other local
alum chapters. Hopefully, I came back with some good ideas and you'll enjoy
some of them!
During convention, one of my favorite events was the Women of
Achievement Luncheon featured a roundtable discussion with the four inductees
this year: Bobbe Chaback Bridge, Washington, a former Associate Justice
of the Washington Supreme Court; Meryl Davis, Michigan, an American ice
dancer who is the 2010 Olympic
silver medalist and the 2010 World silver medalist with partner Charlie White;
Barbara Jones, Indiana, vice president/student affairs at the University
of Miami/Ohio; and Kassie McClure Rempel, North Carolina, an
entrepreneur and shoe lover who owns a thriving business, SimplySo les. That afternoon, Deborah Norville, Georgia,
gave a keynote speech on the power of respect.
Left: Christi and Kara with Deborah Norville
Friday, July 2 was focused on philanthropy as the morning started with
the Miracle Mile 5K walk/run to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Each
runner was asked to raise $250 dollars to meet the goal of raising $10,000 for
St. Jude's. As a participant in the race, I raised $325 with the help of the
San Jose Alumnae Chapter! And, I finished the race with quite a distinguished
group of ladies: (shown below) new executive board members Julie Greene Haskell, Vermont, Heather Smart Evans, William
& Mary, and Alison Ream Griffin, Southern Methodist, National Housing Corporation Board of
Directors President Christi Crowder Flynn, Washington, and Ginny
Carroll, winner of the one of three 2010 Vision Awards."
